Green bunkering at a low cost

Watch the video below to hear Kosan Crisplant's Head of the LNG department, Lars Sall, present an opportunity for small scale bunkering of LNG in which Kosan Crisplant acts as a bridge between the ferry crew who uses the LNG on the one side and the suppliers of the LNG on the other.

Initially, three options for bunkering LNG are presented:

1. Bunkering via truck to ship.
2. Bunkering via ship to ship.
3. Bunkering from an intermediate tank through a pipeline.

Kosan Crisplant introduces a fourth option that combines the advantages from option 1 and 3; this fourth option is exemplified by Kosan Crisplant's solution for the Samsø ferry - a dual fuel vessel that runs on LNG from the port of Hou to the island of Samsø.

Kosan Crisplant supplied the bunkering facility meeting every requirement for the solution. It needed to be emission free, flexible, and automatic and require no permanent staff on shore. Last but certainly not least, the need to bunker the vessel within the 15 minutes at our disposal before the ferry takes off again was met. Hence, our solution for the Samsø ferry facilitates more speed and more flow, allowing us to bunker 1000 litres/minute, which is almost double the volume compared to bunkering via truck to ship.

The flexibility of the installation consists in the fact that the facility is movable. The plan is to fuel the ferry with biogas from Samsø in the course of 3-5 years, so moving the facility when the biogas installation on the island is finished had to be a part of the solution.

Kosan Crisplant's bunkering system is scalable and thus applicable to vessels with fuel requirements in the range from 40 m3 up to no less than 300-400 m3 by means of additional intermediate tanks or by adding more semi-trailers in order to increase the flow and the volume. The solution mitigates some of the disadvantages of the above mentioned options (such as low loading rates, being geographically fixed and entailing high costs) and provides instead a better flow and more volume while at the same time curbing investments.
